<p><strong>Damn it! </strong></p>
<p>It breaks my<strong> heart </strong>every time I read about a comic artist finding it difficult to make ends meet, especially when they are extremely talented and were at one time among the <strong>elite </strong>creators in the field.</p>
<p><strong>Welcome to the Arts!</strong></p>
<p>I guess this means that comics have finally<strong> arrived </strong>as an art form. There was a time when a job in comics was just a bottom feeder stepping stone to a more lucrative career in advertising or other creative fields. Now artists are <strong>begging</strong> for a career in comics. Who would have guessed?</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11382" title="dick_giordano" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/dick_giordano.jpg" alt="" width="151" height="239" />It was not long ago when <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Giordano" target="_blank">Dick Giordano</a></strong> feared that the talent pool in comics was about to be <strong>extinct</strong> prompting him to create an apprentice program at <strong>DC </strong>in the late <strong>1970&#8242;s</strong>. Around the same time <strong><a href="http://kubertschool.edu/" target="_blank">Joe Kubert&#8217;s</a></strong> school became a fertile environment, producing numerous great talents. Other teachers like <strong><a href="http://www.willeisner.com/" target="_blank">Will Eisner</a></strong><strong> </strong>and <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burne_Hogarth" target="_blank">Burne Hogarth</a></strong> also brandished brilliant torches, shining a bright light on education of the medium.</p>
<p>Comics now have joined the respected ranks of music, dance, literature, painting and sculpture where legions of <strong>practitioners</strong> strive for success yet only a rare few ever achieve <strong>stardom</strong> and tremendous financial reward.</p>

<p>Does this mean that if you are not one of the supremely talented or lucky you should just pack up the pencils paper and ink and give up? <strong>Hell no!</strong></p>
<p>Artists in general have a strange sense of<strong> entitlement</strong>. Growing up, most are made well aware of their talents by doting family and friends that hail their <strong>giftedness</strong>. Stars in their own small circles, many are not prepared to face the challenge of competition in the larger arena of the real world. They expect the commendations and glories that they always knew and become <strong>disenchanted</strong> when it requires significantly greater effort to achieve success.</p>
<p>Success in any medium requires hard work well beyond talent and this is especially true in comics because of <strong>limited opportunity.</strong> Other than publishing yourself, there are so few publishers willing to pay reasonable fees for the work. There are also <strong>fewer projects</strong> by major publishing houses which will become an <strong>epidemic</strong> as the digital market grows.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.deathfatigue.com/"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9528" title="stooper_detail" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stooper_detail.png" alt="" width="252" height="194" /></a>The Big Two&#8217;s <strong>bean counters</strong> will surely realize that the seventy years of content that they already posses will be enough to <strong>saturate</strong> the digital market. Their money would be better spent <strong>digitalizing </strong>the classic material than spending it on new work that might require royalties and other forms of compensation not to mention costly editorial and production <strong>expenses</strong>.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s a comic artist to do? What else? Get creative! Pave your own road to success by marketing, networking, publishing, teaching and creating comics, just like every other person that calls themselves a <strong>professional</strong> artist of the medium of their choice.</p>
<p><strong>Superstars</strong> in every creative field are <strong>rare</strong> but plenty of creative folks support themselves and their families while  doing what they love by digging hard into the trenches and <strong>working it</strong>. Just ask any wedding singer, music teacher, production artist, variety entertainer. How many musicians are there in a garage band performing locally that have dreams of being a big star? <strong>Plenty</strong>.</p>
<p>The <strong>environment </strong>for creating comics and profiting from them has never been more full of opportunity thanks to the <strong>Direct Market</strong>, digital printing,  the internet, and digital distribution. Any one can make comics and have them distributed around the world in no time. Not everyone will get rich making comics but, like every art field, the cream will rise to the top and others will find levels of success to meet their personal efforts and some will simply <strong>give up</strong> their dream.</p>

<p>One thing is for sure, like the <strong>lottery</strong>, you can&#8217;t win if you don&#8217;t play. Last week a graphic novel written by a fourteen year old girl, <strong><a href="http://www.rachelbookcorner.com/" target="_blank">Rachel Yu</a></strong>, was number one on <strong>Amazon&#8217;s Kindle Fire</strong>, outselling any graphic novel by <strong>Marvel</strong> or <strong>DC!</strong> The playing field is as even as it is ever going to be regarding <strong>distribution</strong> and the comic creators have the upper hand when it comes to being able to create and control exciting, fresh, <strong>new concepts.</strong></p>

<p><strong>2012</strong> has already been tagged as the year of the <strong><a href="http://www.comicsbeat.com/2012/01/06/2012-year-of-the-artist-entrepreneur/" target="_blank">artist-entrepreneur</a></strong>. It most definitely is! If you have been following the <strong><a href="http://occupywallst.org/" target="_blank">Occupy</a></strong><strong> movement</strong> you may be in anticipation of a <strong>revolution</strong>. <p>The <strong>Fall Classic</strong> is upon us and here in the <strong>Philadelphia</strong> area we baseball fans have reason to be excited! The <strong><a href="http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=phi" target="_blank">Phillies</a></strong> are making their fifth trip in a row to the playoffs, hoping to reach the <strong>World Series </strong>for the third time in four years!</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://kirbymuseum.org/popupcampaign"><img class="size-full wp-image-10676 alignright" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/swat.jpg" alt="" width="270" height="276" /></a>Sports</strong> and<strong> comics</strong> have a lot in common, challenge, conflict, victory, colorful uniforms drenched in primary colors and heroes, <strong>plenty</strong> of heroes. In sports heroes come and go. A hero one day may be the <strong>goat</strong> the next. Some heroes become legends and their exploits border on the mythic. The greatest tragedy in sports is when the most idyllic of heroes fall from grace crushing the hearts of all their faithful fans and admirers.</p>
<p><strong>Phillies</strong> fans, though currently enjoying a great era of success, have a long history of witnessing failed efforts so the few highlights in their history shine like beacons. We all know that the Phil&#8217;s first <strong>World Series Championship</strong>, won in <strong>1980</strong>, would never have happened without, then first baseman,<strong> </strong><strong><a href="http://www.peterose.com/" target="_blank">Pete Rose</a></strong>.</p>
<p>It was a great team and had been for a few years with heros like <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Schmidt" target="_blank">Mike Schmidt</a></strong><strong>, <a href="http://www.stevecarlton.com/" target="_blank">Steve Carlton</a></strong><strong>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Bowa" target="_blank">Larry Bowa</a></strong><strong>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Luzinski" target="_blank">Greg Luzinski</a></strong><strong>, </strong><strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Boone" target="_blank">Bob Boone</a></strong> and other greats but the acquisition of <strong>Pete Rose</strong> made the difference. He was <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Rose" target="_blank">Charlie Hustle</a></strong><strong>, Mr. Baseball</strong>.  Even when <strong>Rose</strong> played for the opposing <strong>Cincinnati Reds</strong>, as much as he was a hated rival, he had to be admired. <strong>Pete Rose</strong> was the kind of player every fan wanted on their team, hard working, skilled and doggedly determined to win.</p>
<p><strong>Pete Rose</strong> defined everything that was great about baseball and was one of the sport&#8217;s greatest heroes.  When he was banned from<strong> Major League Baseball</strong> in <strong>1989</strong> and later from the <strong><a href="http://baseballhall.org/" target="_blank">Baseball Hall of Fame</a></strong> in <strong>1991</strong> because of his admissions to gambling and betting on his team, his situation ignited a firestorm of contention among baseball fans that continues today.</p>
<p>Many believe that<strong> Pete Rose&#8217;s</strong> banishment from <strong>Major League Baseball</strong> and the <strong>Hall of Fame</strong> is unfair, deprives fans of an accurate accounting of history and is a hypocrisy when compared to the inductees that are known drinkers, wife beaters, drug users, etc.</p>

<p>But this is <strong>Charlie Hustle</strong>, and when I heard that there was a <strong><a href="http://reds.enquirer.com/1999/07/25/red_museum_dedicated.html" target="_blank">Pete Rose Museum</a></strong> in <strong>Cooperstown</strong> I gloated at the thought of Mr. Baseball erecting a gleaming shrine to himself right in the shadow of Baseball&#8217;s hallowed <strong>Hall of Fame</strong> redirecting the foot traffic through his doors and reaping financial rewards and well deserved glory from adoring fans ravenous for memorabilia with his name on it. I imagined Pete standing in his door thumbing his nose at <strong>Major League Baseball</strong>, then going to the bank, <strong>everyday</strong>.</p>
<p>In actuality the <strong>Pete Rose Museum</strong> is a modest hall of memorabilia on the second floor of a brick building a block away from the <strong>Hall of Fame </strong>sitting atop the <strong><a href="http://www.discoverourtown.com/NY/Cooperstown/Attractions/mickey-mantle-museum/13668.html" target="_blank">Mickey Mantle Museum</a></strong> and <strong>Pete Rose</strong> continues to face his life sentence with dignity and respect to the sport that he so loved.</p>
<p>So what does this all have to do with <strong>Jack Kirby</strong>?</p>
<p><strong>Pete Rose&#8217;s</strong> story in some ways reminds me of<strong> Jack Kirby&#8217;s</strong> story. <strong>Kirby </strong>dedicated his life to the mastery of the comics medium he loved. In the eye&#8217;s of many, he was the greatest but for all his accomplishments he was denied the final rewards of his endeavors, some rights to the many, many characters he created.<strong> Jack Kirby&#8217;s</strong> characters continue to make millions of dollars for the corporations that claim the rights while his heirs continue to fight for some reasonable compensation.</p>
<p>Heated discussion has continued for decades as to what is fair in the case of <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> and other comic artists with similar issues that will probably never be settled.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-10684" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/jack_kirby_bust.gif" alt="" width="185" height="346" />My thought is that maybe, like in the case of <strong>Rose&#8217;s</strong> museum, focus should be trained away from the monolithic industry and aimed at the <strong>man</strong> himself, or in this case, the <strong>King, Jack Kirby</strong>.</p>
<p>It is time that the name <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> become a brand that is synonymous with all that is great and can be great about comics. Beyond all the characters that <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> created, there is a style that is distinctive solely to him a style that has affected pop culture for decades.</p>
<p>Imagine a<strong> Jack Kirby</strong> retail store that sold only product that was derived from <strong>Kirby&#8217;s</strong> original creations. Sure, it would look like a comic shop littered with product produced by <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC </strong>but the retail revenue instead of meager royalties  from the wholesale revenue would go to holders of the <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> store who would either be the heirs or someone who pays the heirs for the rights to use<strong> Jack Kirby&#8217;s</strong> name.</p>
<p>How about <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> comic conventions? <strong>Kirby Con International?</strong> There might be a few bucks to be made there!</p>
<p>The <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> brand in a strange turn could license rights from <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> to produce all kinds of <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> branded merchandise. Everyone makes money and the <strong>Kirby</strong> legacy lives on providing the heirs with fiscal security for generations.</p>
<p><strong>Kirby&#8217;s</strong> distinctive style could lend to clothing designs that could rival anything on the market today. <p>I recently had an opportunity to reread and old <a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/cr_reviews/14424/" target="_blank">blog post</a> by <strong>Tom Spurgeon</strong> on his site <strong>The Comics Reporter</strong>. In the <a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/cr_reviews/14424/" target="_blank">blog post</a> Tom takes a look at one of our old<strong> Comico</strong> publications, <strong><a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/cr_reviews/14424/" target="_blank">AZ</a></strong><a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/cr_reviews/14424/" target="_blank"> by our late partner </a><strong><a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/cr_reviews/14424/" target="_blank">Phil LaSorda</a></strong>.  Tom questions the cultural impact that such an obviously crude attempt at making comics may or should have on the market and the medium.</p>
<p>Now I along with my current publishing partner <strong><a href="http://www.billcucinotta.com/" target="_blank">Bill Cucinotta</a></strong> who was also a partner back in those early <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comico_Comics" target="_blank">Comico</a></strong> days may be biased but we also have a unique perspective just by having been there. We know, retrospectively, that the work we did in those days was seminal at best and was often criticized as being <strong>crap</strong>. It is easy to look back and be embarrassed by our rudimentary attempts to both create and publish comics. The irony, I suppose, is that as rudimentary as that material was, we are both still very <strong>proud</strong> of it for many reasons, so much so that we published it all again, right here on <strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/pages/co2_comics.html" target="_self">CO2 Comics</a></strong>.</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/pages/co2_slaughterman_primer.html" target="_self">SLAUGHTERMAN</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/pages/co2_skrog_munchkin_murders.html" target="_blank">SKROG</a> </strong>may not have had many more redeeming qualities than <strong>AZ</strong> but they were all cornerstone publications that established a foundation that <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comico_Comics" target="_blank">Comico</a></strong>, one of the most influential independent publishers of the eighties, was built on. For this reason alone, despite their critical ineptness, yes, they had, and continue to have cultural impact.</p>
<p>I remember a scathing review by <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_Yronwode" target="_blank">Cat Yronwode</a></strong> in the <strong><a href="http://cbgxtra.com/" target="_blank">Comics Buyers Guide</a></strong> that questioned, &#8220;who gave us the right to publish such crap?&#8221; My fiery response was that we all have the right to publish what we want to in <strong>America</strong> and that, crap or not, it will be the market that decides the success of the product. I wish I had those <strong>CBG</strong> articles today.</p>
<p>One thing we did well at <strong>Comico</strong>, in those early days, was to learn from our mistakes. It did not take long or us to realize our success would come from publishing others. It was, however, our relationships that we had developed hanging in artist alleys at comic conventions, and our ability to relate to young and maturing talent that allowed us the opportunity to work with the likes of <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Wagner" target="_blank">Matt Wagner</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Willingham" target="_blank">Bill Willingham</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Kieth" target="_blank">Sam Kieth</a></strong>,<strong> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Dixon" target="_blank">Chuck Dixon</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Hunt" target="_blank">Judith Hunt</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://vokesfolks.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Neil Vokes</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.comicvine.com/rich-rankin/26-9492/" target="_blank">Rich Rankin</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://reginaldbyers.com/" target="_blank">Reggie Byers</a></strong> and many many others.</p>
<p>We also published a new talent showcase called <strong><a href="http://www.comicvine.com/comico-primer/49-21266/" target="_blank">Primer</a> </strong>where we published the earliest work of many other budding artists who were not quite ready for the <strong>Big Two</strong>.</p>

<p>To me the biggest impact that <strong>Comico</strong> had on the comics industry, was that it gave evidence that if a handful of guys with apparently limited talent and experience could build a company that at one time was ranked #3 behind <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> in monthly sales, then maybe, just maybe, <strong>anybody</strong> can.</p>
<p>I believe we created an opportunity for creators to get<strong> bold</strong> enough to publish their own work or feel more confident when presenting it to others. We all did it as artists, looked at other work that we considered weak and say, &#8220;hey, I&#8217;m at least as good as this, if this can be published than so can mine.&#8221;</p>

<p>We may have been naive or overconfident when we launched <strong>Comico</strong> but we had one mantra that we held to that was first spoken by Phil, <em> &#8220;We don&#8217;t want to look back years from now and regret that we didn&#8217;t try when we had the chance.&#8221;</em> To us, the fear of failure was never as great as the fear of never having the opportunity to make comics professionally.  To do what we loved.</p>
<p>Today the internet is the <strong>greatest</strong> thing for young comic artists and for the entire medium. Anyone can publish on the web and, yes, there is a ton of incredible crap out there but more people than ever are taking a shot making comics and we fans of the medium are the winners because tremendous comic talent that may have never tried before is now offering our eyes a feast of variety that has<strong> never</strong> existed in comics.</p>
<p>So to answer <strong><a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/cr_reviews/14424/" target="_blank">Tom Spurgeon&#8217;s</a></strong><a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/cr_reviews/14424/" target="_blank"> quote</a>: <em>&#8220;</em><em>The question that many of us near comics ask &#8212; if only to each other &#8212; is if the art form can survive without the occasional cycling back to cruder efforts like this one, unpretentious material devoid of any hope for life or riches beyond its publication schedule that helped revitalize the art form four or five times during a low ebb.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><strong>No!</strong> The art form, or more accurately the <strong>medium</strong> of comics or any medium for that matter, cannot survive without a cycle that includes cruder efforts. No crude efforts would imply no young talent and with no young talent to revitalize a medium, that medium will die a death of eventual <strong>mediocrity</strong>.</p>
<p>To paraphrase <strong>McDonald&#8217;s</strong> founder <strong>Ray Kroc</strong>, <em>&#8220;When you&#8217;re green you grow. When you&#8217;re ripe you rot.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>So, be brave and<strong> create!</strong> Express yourself as well as you know how and be willing to show the world.  Make mistakes. Learn from them. Never stop growing. But when you do someone new will begin making their own mistakes and we will all have the pleasure of witnessing their adventure.</p>
<p>Holy crap, it&#8217;s the <strong>circle of life</strong>, comics style.</p>

<p>The heirs of <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby" target="_blank">Jack</a></strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby" target="_blank"> </a><strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby" target="_blank">Kirby</a></strong> took a huge hit last week when a judge in <strong>New York </strong><a href="http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/07/28/full-ruling-for-marvels-win-against-jack-kirby/" target="_blank">ruled against them</a>. The determination that all of <strong>Kirby&#8217;s</strong> creations were protected by a 1909 <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_for_hire" target="_blank">Work-for-Hire</a></strong> copyright law insured that those creations remained the property of <strong>Marvel/Disney</strong>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.deathfatigue.com/"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9912" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/america.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="185" /></a>Many had hoped for a different outcome that would have seen aged comic creators and the heirs of deceased comic creators <strong>finally</strong> enjoy at least some substantial reward from the works that made fortunes for the comic companies that exploited them.</p>
<p>Naturally there is <strong>outrage</strong> from supporters of the creators, fans who appreciated the talent and creativity of the people that created the<strong> iconic </strong>characters that we have all grown to love and which have become ingrained in the fabric of  the medium and popular culture <strong>worldwide</strong>.</p>
<p>Folks with less of an emotional investment in the history of the medium seem more than willing to side with the comic book <strong>companies</strong> siting their investment, risk and marketing expertise as the reasons those institutions have earned and deserve the windfalls derived from these same works.</p>
<p>The discussion gets heated because both sides are <strong>right,</strong> not just from their own perspective but from the dial of the moral compass as well where choices were made and agreements established in a time where no-one could have anticipated the <strong>longevity</strong> of the properties and the <strong>monumental </strong>successes to be derived.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9924" title="Superman-Movie-Poster" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Superman-Movie-Poster1.jpg" alt="" width="239" height="283" />The true long-term potential of comic book characters and how it may affect the coffers of the comic book creators did not seem to be such an issue until the technology in film developed to the point where we all <strong>believed that a man could fly</strong>. The first <strong>Superman</strong> movie opened the doors for the comic book blockbuster and ignited the first significant challenge from the creators of the character that had sold their rights away decades prior. Over thirty years later that battle is still not completely resolved and may never be.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/great_depression.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-9915" title="great_depression" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/great_depression.jpg" alt="" width="236" height="236" /></a></p>
<p>The problem stems from how the business of comic books was done from its inception in the age of the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_depression" target="_blank">Great Depression</a></strong><strong>.</strong> Young, hungry artists signed away their work happily just to have a job and be able to feed their families. Most artists looked at comics as a mere stepping stone into  the more revered fields of advertising, illustration and design. Many used<strong> pseudonyms</strong> to ensure that they would not be stereotyped by their work in comics which was not considered with high esteem at the time. Those that left comics for the more reputable work rarely looked back.</p>
<p>By the mid sixties <strong>Marvel </strong>had created an atmosphere where creators began to feel like they could have a career in comics and enjoy it. With <strong>Marvel&#8217;s</strong> success came contracts, benefits, and enough work to be able to depend on and <strong>DC</strong> soon followed suit.</p>
<p>The notion of <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_for_hire" target="_blank">Work-for-Hire</a></strong>, however, remained the norm and, for the Big Two, generally remains the same today especially regarding the characters that are the staple trademarks of each company.</p>
<p>The judgement against the <strong>Kirby</strong> heirs emphasizes one thing, Creators <strong>BEWARE</strong> of this business model. If you ever expect to reap full benefit from your creations, seek  other options. Thankfully today there are plenty.</p>
<p>Traditional publishers of other works have generally reserved the copyright for the creators and negotiated royalty arrangements that created financial opportunity for <strong>both</strong> sides. That is not to say that other media were not capable of taking advantage of the talent. Plenty of stars in film, television, music and sports had to suffer as <strong>examples</strong> of why their industries all needed to change compensation standards.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/nfl.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-9910" title="nfl" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/nfl.jpg" alt="" width="120" height="120" /></a>The conclusion of the recent <strong>NFL</strong> lockout is proof that negotiation is reasonable and necessary  on a regular basis to insure some type of perceived fairness in any <strong>entertainment </strong>industry. Their current deal will be <strong>renegotiated</strong> in ten years in which time much may change.</p>
<p>The chance for new <strong>start-up</strong> companies to offer different business models that offered creators the opportunity to retain ownership of their rights and to share in profit was perhaps the greatest opportunity that was derived by the creation of the <strong>Direct Market</strong> in comics. These virtues had already existed in the <strong>Underground Market</strong> but the opportunity to generate a more mainstream product and compete directly with <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> gave many creators new options. Companies like <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_Comics" target="_blank">Eclipse</a></strong><strong>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Comics" target="_blank">Pacific</a></strong><strong>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_Comics#Publisher" target="_blank">Capital</a></strong><strong>, </strong><strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Comics" target="_blank">First</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comico" target="_blank">Comico</a></strong>, generated creator owned lines of color comics in the eighties that set the foundation and the standards for future <strong>independent</strong> companies with similar creator values.</p>

<p>Today, the Internet and Digital forms of comic distribution are offering complete autonomy for creators as we demonstrate just one option in our collective cooperative here at <strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/pages/co2_comics.html" target="_self">CO2 Comics</a></strong> were creators own <strong>100%</strong> of their properties. Because of the internet there are more comic artists in the world than ever before.  Finding ways to successfully generate revenue remains a risky proposition but the opportunity to reap full benefit is now where many believe it belongs, <strong>in the hands of the creators.</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>As we all look toward the future of the <strong>Comics Industry</strong> I hope we remember the heavily licked wounds of the many creators that were retrospectively victimized by their lone <strong>Work-for-Hire </strong>option. The list of creators is long and sad but it can <strong>end</strong> with a simple choice <strong>not</strong> to work under those conditions, <strong>ever</strong>. If you do, expect no sympathy when you cry for additional merit compensation and fail to get it because your choice will have been an <strong>educated</strong> one that we all know the unfortunate answer to.</p>

<p>As for my own experience,<strong> comic strips</strong> were my first introduction to <strong>sequential art</strong>. I remember, when I was a very young child, anxiously looking forward to the Sunday paper each week so I could sprawl out on the floor and be mesmerized by the colorful pictures that seemingly came to life on the expansive sheets of paper. I couldn&#8217;t read but I had a good sense for what was going on especially in the action comics I was drawn to like <strong>Buck Rogers, Prince Valiant, Popeye, Alley Oop </strong>and<strong> Dick Tracy.</strong></p>

<p><strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/silly-putty.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9442" title="silly putty" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/silly-putty.jpg" alt="" width="280" height="214" /></a>Silly Putty</strong> made reading the comics more tactile as I was fond of capturing the images on the rubbery clay and distorting them with seemingly limitless possibilities.  This was probably how I conjured the first notion that I could exercise my creative urges with comics.  A long weekend afternoon of rolling gleefully on sheets of newspaper  would leave me fully smudged with cheap ink, my toddler&#8217;s clothes permeated with the musty odor of newsprint and my imagination broadened with the endless creative potential that was  exhibited in those color drenched comics.</p>
<p>My local newspaper, the <strong><a href="http://www.timesherald.com/" target="_blank">Norristown TIMES HERALD</a></strong> had a weekly supplement for children, it was a four-page, black-and-white,  pull-out called <strong>TINY TURTLE</strong> that was mostly a cartoony activity sheet that encouraged children to color, draw, do puzzles, read and learn. It featured a monthly calender and was always specific to the season. This came in the Saturday edition of the paper ensuring that my childhood weekends were fairly occupied by my local press.</p>

<p>Collections of <strong>Charles Schulz&#8217; PEANUTS</strong> were my first recollection of enjoying comics bound by covers. My uncle would bring the pocket book size collections over to amuse me while I recovered from open heart surgery. I was nine years old and I would read them front to back before ever putting them down. They were the best distraction from my physical ailments and proof that laughter was, in fact, the best medicine. Nothing was funnier to me than the exploits of <strong>Charlie Brown, Snoopy</strong> and the gang and I would torture my family by reading the gags aloud and describing the pictures. Somehow the jokes were never as funny when I retold them but my own sides still split with laughter upon each retelling.</p>
<p>I was an avid reader in grade school and gravitated toward adventure and mystery stories. I remember enjoying series books like <strong>The BOBBSEY TWINS</strong>, <strong>The HARDY</strong> <strong>BOYS</strong> and <strong>TOM SWIFT</strong>. During this time I remember<strong> Big Little Books</strong> capturing my attention as well.  <strong>Big Little Books</strong> were chock full of illustrations on every other page and I found myself just as drawn to the images as I was toward the words.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/barbershop_pole.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-9472 alignright" title="barbershop_pole" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/barbershop_pole.jpg" alt="" width="107" height="224" /></a>Trips to the barber shop were where I first encountered comic books. I remember there being two magazine racks in the back of the shop, one for the men and the other for the boys. The men&#8217;s rack was chock full of <strong>PLAYBOY</strong> magazines and the best way to get a glimpse of their voluptuous subject matter was to spend as much time as possible by the other precariously close rack that contained comic books.</p>
<p>Though the comics were at that point a precocious end to a means, I would spend a lot of time thumbing through them and I soon discovered that there was a difference between the <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC </strong>comics. The <strong>DC</strong> comics at the time had a lot of short stories in them and I found that I could enjoy them more because I could get a full story while I waited. The <strong>Marvel</strong> comics always left me hanging and though I found the images and story more dynamic, I would always be left disappointed, not knowing how the story ended.</p>
<p>As I became a little more independent I would make frequent trips to the local <strong>7-11</strong> convenience store that could be reached through a network of shortcuts through neighbors&#8217; yards. The mission was always the same, milk and bread for Mom, baseball cards and <strong>Slurpees</strong> for me and my brothers.</p>
<p>The <strong>Slurpee</strong> cups at the time had images of baseball players on them and my brothers and I were avid collectors, especially hunting for cups of our beloved <strong>Phillies</strong>.  We were always on the prowl for<strong> cups featuring </strong>our heroes<strong> Steve Carlton, Greg Luzinski, Larry Bowa </strong>and<strong> Mike Schmidt</strong>. Inevitably we had stacks of those baseball cups featuring stars from every team in <strong>MLB</strong>. This went on for a couple of seasons then one day everything changed. The <strong>Slurpee</strong> cups featured something different&#8230; <strong>Marvel characters!</strong></p>

<p>I had already been picking at comics and had, despite my earlier convictions about Marvel comics,<strong> </strong>recently been enamored with issue #167 of <strong>CAPTAIN AMERICA and the FALCON</strong> by <strong>Steve Englehart </strong>and <strong>Sal Buscema</strong>. I remember rushing home and reading it beneath a peach tree in my back yard on a particularly balmy fall day, I then spent  the afternoon recreating the cover while sitting at the dining room table.</p>

<p>The <strong>Slurpee</strong> cup completist in me along with the <strong>Marvel</strong> story arcs  fueled my need to collect the comics and soon I was a master at knowing the delivery dates of the magazines of every convenience and drug store in my immediate area. I started collecting only <strong>CAPTAIN AMERICA</strong> then titles that featured <strong>CAPTAIN AMERICA</strong> soon I found Cap crossing over into title after title and before I knew it I was hooked on the whole <strong>Marvel Universe.</strong></p>
<p>In the process I was collecting those <strong>Slurpee</strong> cups too and found that I loved to copy the classic images off the cups. I probably learned more about drawing the human figure from those images on the cups than any single other resource at the time.</p>
<p>By the time I got to high school my fate was sealed. I knew I wanted to make comics when I grew up and that became the focus of my education until I left college to co-found <strong>COMICO the Comic Company</strong>.</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://www.willceau.com/" target="_blank">Joe Williams</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.willceau.com/" target="_blank">Tina Garceau</a></strong> do a nice job describing the perils in <strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/pages/co2_deadline_1.html" target="_self">There&#8217;s No Escape From DEADLINE</a></strong> which can be read right here at <strong>CO2 Comics</strong>.</p>
<p>Back in the earlier days of comics one artist may have to hack out several comics in a month. Sometimes pools of artists would gather in a hotel room and jam to get an entire story done overnight. Guys like <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Kubert" target="_blank">Joe Kubert</a></strong><strong> </strong>can tell you stories like these all day long.</p>

<p>The worst part was that the pay was not so great considering all the work and talent that was necessary. This is why comics had long been considered the <strong>ghetto</strong> of the creative world.</p>
<p>Fans of <strong>CO2 Comics</strong> that have bought our first book <strong><a href="http://www.comicsinterview.com/" target="_blank">David Anthony Kraft&#8217;s COMICS INTERVIEW: The Complete Collection Volume 1</a></strong> get a great inside look at what the industry looked like prior to the early <strong>1980&#8242;s</strong> through interviews with many artists that had been there from the beginning of the comic book industry.</p>

<p>At times pivotal moments will pop up that <strong>retrospectively</strong> changed the course of comics and continue to effect the industry today.</p>
<p>One of those moments is described by <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Rosen" target="_blank">Joe Rosen</a></strong> who had been a letterer in the industry since <strong>1940</strong> and during the eighties was still a go-to guy in the <strong>Marvel Bullpen</strong>.</p>

<p>He explains how his perspective was that creators generally used comics as a <strong>stepping stone</strong> to hone their skills, make a couple of bucks then move into a more rewarding career in advertising.</p>
<p><strong>Joe</strong> credits <strong>Marvel</strong> with creating an environment with enough successful product, reasonable pay and benefits associated with <strong>contracts</strong> that creators could finally want to make a <strong>career</strong> out of making comics.</p>
<p>When you consider the great talents of the <strong>Silver Age</strong>, however, you still see a significant turnover with only a handful of guys and gals that are staples.</p>
<p>During the eighties, when the <strong>Direct Market</strong> begins to dominate distribution of comics, another shift occurs.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.comicsinterview.com/dick_giordano.html" target="_blank">Dick Giordano</a></strong>, in his interview, describes an industry that was in danger of running out of talent as the older creators were getting set to retire and so few were being prepared to rise up the ranks.</p>

<p><strong>Joe Kubert</strong> who tells about his comic arts school in <strong><a href="http://www.comicsinterview.com/" target="_blank">COMICS INTERVIEW</a></strong>, along with some classes by <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burne_Hogarth" target="_blank">Burne Hogarth</a></strong> at the <strong><a href="http://www.schoolofvisualarts.edu/" target="_blank">School of Visual Arts</a></strong> in <strong>New York</strong> were about the only places that even taught comics at the time.</p>
<p>Dick, while he was running the show at <strong>DC</strong>, instituted a workshop for young talent that he hoped would help fill the impending void.</p>
<p>The educational efforts of these gentlemen and others that followed, the implementation of the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creator%27s_Bill_of_Rights" target="_blank">Creators Bill of Rights</a></strong> and the success of the <strong>Direct Market </strong> and the diversity of product inspired by <strong>Independent  publishers</strong> created a fertile environment that began to make comics an attractive career choice.</p>
<p>Today the numbers of talented people that describe themselves as comic professionals is astounding compared to the expectations of <strong><a href="http://www.comicsinterview.com/dick_giordano.html" target="_blank">Dick Giordano</a></strong> in <strong>1983</strong>.</p>
<p>Though the <strong>Comics Industry</strong> can still be a difficult place to forge a career full of financial gain it provides an opportunity for success that was unheard of just thirty years ago.</p>
<p>Comics have gained a <strong>respect</strong> in the artistic community and can no longer be described as a creative <strong>ghetto</strong>.</p>
<p>Most importantly creators now <strong>make comics because they want to</strong>, not because it is a humbling stepping stone to a greater career.</p>
<p>I enjoy finding these <strong>paradigm shift</strong>s as I read through <strong><a href="http://www.comicsinterview.com/" target="_blank">COMICS INTERVIEW</a></strong>. The eighties was such a period of transformation for the industry as a whole and <strong><a href="http://www.comicsinterview.com/" target="_blank">COMICS INTERVIEW</a></strong> was able to look at the whole era from inside out while giving us a clear view of the past through the eyes of the creators that had been there since the forties.</p>
<p>One thing that will never go away, however, is the dreaded <strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/pages/co2_deadline_1.html" target="_self">DEADLINE</a></strong> and I think I just barely met this one. (Sorry, Bill)</p>

<p>Are we <strong>kidding</strong>?!</p>
<p>Can we seriously refer to it as a <strong>revolution</strong>, now?</p>
<p>This whole idea of creator ownership and creator rights goes way back. What creator wouldn&#8217;t be hesitant to sell away the rights of their creation or just fritter it away on a work for hire contract, but hey, if you wanted to work in comics that&#8217;s how things were done.</p>

<p>The late <strong><a href="http://www.comicsinterview.com/steve_gerber.html" target="_blank">Steve Gerber</a></strong> was the first guy I remember to have the guts to stand up and  buck the system. The thumbing of his nose at <strong>Marvel</strong> who ironically was haggling  trademark issues with the then adversarial <strong>Disney</strong> corporation over <strong>Steve&#8217;s</strong> brilliant creation, <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_the_Duck" target="_blank">Howard the Duck</a></strong>, was the shot heard around the world for comic creators.</p>
<p>His collaboration with <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_kirby" target="_blank">Jack Kirby</a></strong> on <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destroyer_Duck" target="_blank">Destroyer Duck</a></strong> published by <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_Comics" target="_blank">Eclipse Comics</a></strong>, an early Independent publisher, was an example of what was to come in regards to creator rights and ownership.</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_kirby" target="_blank">Jack Kirby</a></strong> of course was the <strong>King</strong> of comic creators and he too required the support of comic creators everywhere in a battle for his rights which has yet to be settled years after his passing.</p>
<p>Creators have fought the good fight. They have educated themselves on copyright issues. They have marketed their works, self published, merchandised, licensed and have experimented with formatting in both print and digital.</p>
<p>Creators have brought diversity to the medium exploring genres well beyond superheroes. Their efforts have been awarded with film deals and other opportunities never afforded to comic creators back in the day.</p>
<p>This dynamic climate for creators has been in the making for over thirty years. It&#8217;s not a revolution, its a resolution to what was unfair in the industry for decades.</p>
<p>So why all of the sudden rhetoric?  Why all of the jitters?</p>
<p>Because there is an air of complacency.</p>
<p>Distribution is one of the key ingredients to independence for the creator. The early days of the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Market" target="_blank">Direct Market</a></strong>, made it a haven for independent publishers and innovative creators. Without the <strong>Direct Market</strong> there would be no diversity in comics today. <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> have been happy to let a small niche of unique product proliferate but have always been quick to flood the market when there were signs of significant competition rising.</p>
<p>The <strong>Direct Market</strong> is suffocating as the demand for print shrinks and the biggest casualties will be the small publishers that publish the creator owned works, inciting an exodus to digital content distributors.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.deathfatigue.com/"><img class="size-full wp-image-7797 alignright" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/superman_spiderman.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="245" /></a>These same distributors have access to an enormous library of <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> works. If the big two were happy to flood the market of the monthly pull list, do you think they would care if they drowned the digital market with <strong>70 years</strong> of available monthly content?</p>
<p>Remember, this is not just <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> we are talking about. Those guys in the <strong>New York</strong> offices actually love comics and probably enjoy a lot of the diverse content out there but <strong>Warner Brothers</strong> and <strong>Disney</strong> will need and want to protect their <strong>intellectual properties</strong>.</p>
<p>The best way to guarantee that <strong>Superman</strong> and <strong>Spidey</strong> have no competition is to make sure there can be none.</p>
<p>Comics are too easy to produce, publish and distribute compared to any other visual entertainment medium. Its too easy for another <strong><a href="http://www.ninjaturtles.com/" target="_blank">Mutant Turtle</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.spawn.com/" target="_blank">Spawn</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.scottpilgrim.com/" target="_blank">Scott Pilgrim</a></strong>, or <strong><a href="http://www.wimpykid.com/" target="_blank">Wimpy Kid</a></strong> to sneak up and take market dollars.</p>

<p>It is naive to  think that the monster corporations are not intent on controlling <strong>digital distribution</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Revolution</strong>? No.</p>
<p>Wake up call?</p>
<p><strong>YES!!!</strong></p>
<p>Creators have got to be smart and protect the market for each other. We need to focus on innovative ways to market comics to the new generation of <strong>digital readers</strong>. Keep the sources open. Capitalize on the web. Be creative about sourcing revenue from free content as well as monetized downloads.<br />
Be a community.</p>
<p>Beware of the competition. It is not each other. It is the <strong>super powers</strong> that be.</p>
<p>Most of all, value your <strong>creative freedom</strong>. It has been fought for for decades. Now is the time that we may have the greatest opportunity in front of us.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s not let it slip away.</p>

<p><strong>Hallelujah!</strong></p>
<p>What a wonderful time to be a <strong>comics creator</strong>!</p>
<p>More options exist than ever before to create original works, have them published in multiple formats, reach a worldwide audience, retain ownership and have a sense of control over  what happens with our <strong>intellectual properties</strong>.</p>
<p>All we have to do is figure out how to make some <strong>money</strong> while we&#8217;re at it!</p>
<p>It is this sense of monetary entitlement that seems to be frustrating creators the most and it is justifiable, especially in this awful economy. We all want to be paid for our hard work.</p>
<p>How do we define our value? What is appropriate compensation for what we do as <strong>comic creators</strong>? When do we realize we are being <strong>screwed</strong> and by who?</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t an issue unique to <strong>comic creators</strong>. Ever apply for a job? Any job? The trickiest blank to fill on the application is &#8220;<strong>desired salary</strong>.&#8221; With few exceptions, the more labor intensive the job is, the less we can expect to be paid.</p>
<p><strong>The arts</strong>, regardless of the discipline, always seem to leave a trail of under appreciated and undervalued yet talented creative types groveling in the wake of employers who have benefited immensely from the revenues generated by the <strong>exploitation</strong> of the works created by the <strong>artists</strong> that they have dealt with.</p>
<p>We all know the exceptions. <strong>The stars</strong> in the arts and entertainment world shine bright and are showered with wealth, adding to the frustration of those that toil diligently at their craft for limited compensation. These are the <strong>artists</strong> that either know how to manage and promote themselves or are able to surround themselves with people they trust to handle these duties.</p>
<p>I have always believed that if you want to earn what you feel you deserve  as a <strong>creator</strong>, you should work for <strong>yourself</strong>. Why make someone else rich at the expense of <strong>your</strong> talent? This, of course takes time, requires investment, commitment and risk, most of the elements that the publisher <strong>assumes</strong> when publishing a work and why they <strong>expect</strong> to retain so much of the revenue generated by sales.</p>
<p>If there was ever a time to take on those daunting responsibilities, <strong>NOW</strong> is the time to take charge of your talents as <strong>comic creators</strong>. There is no need to sell out your skills or your creative ideas to <strong>publishers</strong> who are unwilling to value your work <strong>respectfully</strong>.</p>
<p>The <strong>internet</strong> provides so many opportunities for <strong>creators</strong> that did not exist just ten years ago. <strong>Comic creators</strong> now have tremendous resources available for everything from learning the techniques of the medium to the publication, marketing and distribution of the final work. All of these <strong>assets</strong> are available for free or at minimal cost compared to anything that was ever available before.</p>
<p>As a <strong>community</strong> of <strong>comic creators</strong>, we need to come together and champion each other.  <strong>Now</strong> is the time to redefine the market, recondition the consumers, and reinvent the product. <strong>Now</strong> is the time to take control of our creations and be the beneficiaries of our <strong>own</strong> talent.</p>
<p>Will <strong>201</strong>1 will be the year that <strong>comic creators</strong> finally recognize the significance of their independence? We are off to a good start. In the first few weeks of the new year discussion on this topic has already <strong>stirred</strong> the pot. <strong><a href="http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/01/14/mark-millar-slow-down-on-those-downloadable-comics/" target="_blank">Mark Millar</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/01/20/editorial-dear-content-maker-by-dean-haspiel/" target="_blank">Dean Haspiel</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.comicsbeat.com/?s=joe+casey&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;submit=Go" target="_blank">Joe Casey</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=11571" target="_blank">Warren Ellis</a></strong> and <a href="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/2011/01/18/appless-comics/" target="_blank"><strong>myself</strong></a> have all made a point to instill this dynamic into the mindset of <strong>comic creators</strong>, many of which are diving into the <strong>digital distribution</strong> arena possibly a bit to hastily with a <strong>Gold Rush</strong> mentality.</p>
<p>It is time that we all become as creative and aggressive <strong>marketing</strong> our comics as we are when <strong>creating</strong> them. We can charge in alone or we can rally together by supporting and sharing each other&#8217;s endeavors and ideas, encouraging an evolution that will <strong>redefine</strong> the course of comics as an <strong>industry</strong> and a <strong>medium</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Evolution</strong> at the hands of the <strong>creator</strong>&#8230;what a novel concept. Maybe we can make a <strong>Big Bang</strong> in how comics are perceived by the masses or maybe we can at least put the <strong>Pop</strong> back in our favorite <strong>Pop Art</strong> by insuring that comics are the popular reading material of the widest audience possible.</p>
<p><strong>Bill Cucinotta</strong> and I are committed to exploring the possibilities that are available to the <strong>comic creators</strong> that are part of our cooperative community here at <strong>CO2 Comics</strong>. We also recognize that we are part of the greater community of comics professionals. We intend to be part of the dialog that empowers this new trend of <strong>Creationism</strong>.</p>

<p>We have been challenging the boundaries of convention in the comics field since the early eighties with <strong>Comico</strong>, our former creator owned publishing house that found ways to publish other creators while paying highly competitive page rates and a generous royalty on sales. From modest beginnings we found creative ways to compete directly with <strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> in the fledgeling <strong>Direct Market</strong>. We made inroads in licensing and merchandising that opened the doors for others. We set standards for production and quality with innovation and hard work. <strong>We made mistakes and we learned from them</strong>.</p>
<p>We proved that it is possible to build a dream with perseverance, enthusiasm and creativity. <strong>CO2 Comics</strong> is our opportunity to do that again in this new digital era. As always our focus is on the success of the creators.  We know that the success of the creators that we have relationships with translates into success for us. It is a simple formula and it works.</p>
<p><strong>Creationism</strong> can be the <strong>new evolution</strong> of comics if you let it.</p>
<p>Our message to all  creators:  &#8220;<em>This is your time. This is your opportunity. Take advantage of it. We plan to!</em>&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Apps, apps, apps!</strong> That is all we hear about anymore, especially when the discussion is about <strong>digital comics</strong>. Maybe I&#8217;m dense, too old fashioned or just plain stupid but I have to admit that I just don&#8217;t get it.</p>
<p>I know that there are <strong>apps</strong> for just about everything. <strong>Apple</strong> boasts over 300,000 <strong>apps</strong> available just for the <strong>iPhone</strong>. There are thousands of apps for <strong>Droids</strong>, <strong>Smartphones</strong> and Blackberries too but, face it,  apps are a brilliant marketing tool for <strong>&#8220;App&#8221;le</strong> more than anyone..</p>
<p>Now that the <strong>iPad</strong> is on the scene everyone and their sister can see the potential of comics flourishing on that brilliant 9.7 inch screen and of course the imitators are already popping out everywhere.</p>
<p>In the midst of all this commotion we have all been sold the idea that an <strong>app</strong> is needed to be able to read <strong>comics</strong> on these <strong>portable devices</strong>. An <strong>app</strong>! Quick run out and get one so you can read comics! <strong>Hurry, hurry, hurry!</strong></p>
<p>If you are a <strong>creator</strong> or a <strong>publisher</strong> you especially better get a jump on it before you are left in the dust. Times-a-wasting! Lock into a deal, <strong>NOW!</strong> Tie up your rights and spread that wealth with <strong>Apple</strong>, the <strong>app developer</strong>, and the <strong>publisher</strong> leaving little for the <strong>creator</strong> before it&#8217;s too late!<br />
<strong> Hurry, hurry, hurry!</strong></p>
<p>What a bunch of sheep we are. Happy to be herded to a promised land by the carrot of  new source of possible revenue.</p>
<p><strong>WAKE UP!!</strong></p>
<p><strong>SMELL THE COFFEE!!</strong></p>
<p><strong>STOP BEING A PANSIE!!</strong></p>
<p>Let me bring you back to <strong>Earth</strong> with a simple truth. You do not need an <strong>app</strong> to read tons of great <strong>digital comics</strong> on a <strong>computer</strong>, a <strong>net book</strong>, an <strong>e-reader</strong> or a <strong>cell phone</strong>.</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t need an <strong>app</strong>!</p>
<p>All you need is a <strong>browser</strong>.</p>
<p>If your device can read <strong>Flash</strong> files your options are even greater.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-7650" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/flash_logo.png" alt="" width="144" height="144" />New devices are coming soon from <strong>Samsung</strong> and <strong>Blackberry</strong> that read <strong>Flash</strong>. Soon <strong>Apple</strong> will have to include it as well. Even if they don&#8217;t <strong>Flash</strong> created with <strong>HTML 5</strong> is readable so eventually all <strong>web comics</strong> will be an easy read on any tablet or phone, <strong>app-free</strong>!</p>
<p>If you are a <strong>creator</strong> or a <strong>publisher</strong>, post your <strong>comics</strong> on the <strong>web</strong>, market a <strong>PDF</strong> download, or make your own <strong>app</strong> if you feel that you really have to and guess what?</p>
<p>You are in command!</p>
<p>You have control over your <strong>content</strong>, no censorship, no digital rights management that ties up your property indefinitely and, if you wish to sell your works, get paid directly from your readers without sharing any of the profits except your <strong>PayPal</strong> fees.</p>
<p>I know this all sounds like <strong>blasphemy</strong>!</p>
<p>The <strong>digital comic download</strong> is supposed to be the <strong>savior</strong> of <strong>comics</strong> and finally provide a source of revenue to <strong>creators</strong> while opening up the huge untapped market of the masses.</p>
<p>The magic bullet!</p>
<p>But it is not.</p>
<p>If we allow ourselves to be led down the narrow road of the <strong>app</strong> it is business as usual. In the comics industry we know who wins. Everyone else loses. Even the readers.</p>
<p>Look, as a <strong>publisher</strong>, I have gone toe-to-toe with <strong>Marvel </strong>and DC in the <strong>Direct market</strong>. I&#8217;ve waded into the dark and murky waters of the mass market. I was there championing the rise of creators&#8217; rights and the proliferation of <strong>independent publishers</strong> from the beginning. I know what I&#8217;m talking about.</p>
<p>As a <strong>comic creator</strong> and <strong>publisher</strong> I sought the <strong>Holy Grail</strong> and it wasn&#8217;t <strong>profit</strong>. I&#8217;d be lying if I told you money wasn&#8217;t part of the motivation but the real prize was freedom.</p>
<p><strong>CREATIVE FREEDOM!</strong></p>
<p>The <strong>interne</strong>t gives c<strong>omic creators</strong> the opportunity to enjoy <strong>creative freedom</strong> like never before.  <strong>Creators</strong> can reach a global audience with little expense and retain complete ownership of their works.</p>
<p><strong>Creators</strong> don&#8217;t need to be confined to an <strong>app</strong>. They need to be creative and they need to discover creative ways to generate <strong>revenue</strong>.</p>
<p>When <strong>Bill Cucinotta</strong> and I conceived of <strong>CO2 Comics</strong> this was and continues to be our mission, to create a cooperative community of <strong>comic creators</strong> that support each other to reach a wider audience with diverse material and to maximize the profitability of our individual intellectual property by exploring product options of <strong>digital</strong>, <strong>print</strong>, <strong>merchandise</strong>, other <strong>media</strong> and <strong>licensing</strong>.</p>
<p>In a year and a half we have amassed nearly a thousand pages of <strong>comics</strong> from over twenty distinguished creators that attract about ten thousand hits a day. We have published a 680 page book that is the <strong>greatest collection of comic interviews in the history of comic books</strong>. Most importantly we have created a venue that supports the <strong>creators</strong> that share in our mission by helping them sell their <strong>print products</strong>, <strong>services</strong> and <strong>merchandise</strong> while maintaining complete ownership of their creations.</p>
<p>We are just getting started.</p>
<p>I know that I am coming down pretty hard on <strong>apps</strong>, but I am just trying to make an important point that I believe has to be made.</p>
<p><strong>Apps</strong> can be part of a successful comic marketing strategy but I don&#8217;t think that they can be viewed as a panacea for the entire industry or surely the little guy will get crushed, unnoticed in the shadow of the usual giants and trampled by the rush of new readers herded by powerful marketing machines toward product they are already familiar with.</p>
<p><strong>Comic creators</strong> need to take advantage of the <strong>internet</strong> while it is still inexpensively accessible. Maximize it as a resource while you still have a chance. Don&#8217;t be distracted by the temptations of a huge corporation whose sole motivation is profiting from the work of every creator possible.</p>
<p>That <strong>&#8220;app&#8221;le</strong> looked good to <strong>Eve</strong>, too and look where it got her.</p>

<p><strong>Comics</strong> made the jump from <strong>newspapers</strong> to <strong>comic books</strong> addressing a new publishing trend in the late thirties.</p>
<p>The forties watched <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUPERMAN" target="_blank">Superman</a></strong> be reinvented over and over as a whole genre of <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superheroes" target="_blank">superheroes</a></strong> was created.</p>

<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-7503" title="comics_code" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/comics_code.jpg" alt="" width="67" height="80" />The <strong>comic book</strong> industry rescued itself from oblivion in the fifties by adopting the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_code" target="_blank">Comics Code Authority</a></strong> to placate the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_Subcommittee_on_Juvenile_Delinquency" target="_blank">Senate Subcommittee</a></strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_Subcommittee_on_Juvenile_Delinquency" target="_blank"> on </a><strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_Subcommittee_on_Juvenile_Delinquency" target="_blank">Juvenile Delinquency</a></strong> though it placed a stranglehold on much of what made <strong>comics</strong> interesting and exciting at that time.</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_lee" target="_blank">Stan Lee</a></strong> reinvented the <strong>superhero</strong> genre in the sixties making it viable and relevant to a new generation of readers.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Market" target="_blank">Direct Market</a></strong> pioneered by <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Seuling" target="_blank">Phil Seuling</a></strong> in the seventies gave comics the opportunity to be liberated from the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_code" target="_blank">Comic Code Authority</a></strong>.</p>
<p>The eighties gave rise to <strong>alternative</strong>, <strong>independent publishers</strong> and the concept of <strong>creators rights</strong>.</p>

<p>The nineties showed the vulnerability of the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Market" target="_blank">Direct Market</a></strong> and the power of <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga" target="_blank">Manga</a></strong> in the US market.</p>
<p>The new millennium ushered in the the development of new formats in the wake of <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga" target="_blank">Manga&#8217;s</a></strong> popularity and the <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphic_novel" target="_blank">graphic novel</a></strong> matured as a format that began to dominate the market.</p>
<p>The &#8220;<strong>oughts</strong>&#8221; also ushered in an entirely new venue for comics in the <strong>internet</strong> and <strong>web comics</strong> came on the scene.</p>
<p>Now, as we enter the eighth decade of <strong>comi</strong>c history since the invention of the <strong>comic book</strong>, (I know I am rounding it off by a few years, we&#8217;ll throw a party in 2014 to make up for it) we all have to figure out what to make of the advent of <strong>digital comics</strong>.</p>
<p>For the first time in history, <strong>comics</strong> have total access to a global market direct from the hands of <strong>creators</strong> free from censorship, and the burden of high production costs.</p>
<p><strong><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-7553" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/ipad.jpg" alt="" width="268" height="363" />Digital comics</strong>, whether they are posted on the <strong>web</strong>, offered as a downloadable files or banked on a cloud can be read on devices as small as the palm of your hand or as large as the biggest television monitor you can imagine.</p>
<p><strong>Digital</strong> spells freedom for <strong>creators</strong> and freedom of choice for readers. <strong>Digital</strong> offers a free world of possibility. Now how do we handle all of that potential. More importantly, how do we handle that four letter word: <strong>F-R-E-E</strong>.</p>
<p>We all love to have the freedom to <strong>create</strong> as we please but face it, we all need to make a buck, especially in these terrible economic times.</p>
<p>My suggestion is that now is not the time to get greedy. As much as we as creators want to get what we deserve, consumers are looking for the best deal possible.</p>
<p>I for one, as a consumer, will look at all the <strong>free content</strong> I can get before spending a dime on <strong>digital content</strong>. I will look at every <strong>free website</strong> and I know that there is a ton of great stuff that would take me years to read. Just look at the hundreds of pages of dynamite material right here at <strong><a href="http://www.co2comics.com/" target="_self">CO2 Comics</a></strong>. Hey, I&#8217;m in all my glory because guess what&#8230;it&#8217;s <strong>FREE! FREE! FREE!</strong></p>
<p>Now, on the outside chance that I&#8217;m an unusual cheapskate, tightwad I have to wonder how the folks selling digital content for prices that resemble regular comic prices are making out.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve seen the reports that brag sales of <strong>digital content</strong> for <strong>mobile devices</strong> that are ten times that of last year and I have to be impressed but what does that really mean? First I have to remember that this technology is only about a year old. How many downloads did they sell that first year? Ten times what?</p>

<p>Since July my first book for the iPad <strong><a href="http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/captain-visuals-big-book-of-balloon-art/701756?productTrackingContext=search_results/search_shelf/center/2" target="_blank">Captain Visual&#8217;s Big Book of Balloon Art</a></strong>, which as an e-book sells for <strong>$11.99</strong> as opposed to a <strong>$24.95</strong> book in print, has increased in sales by <strong>1500%</strong>! That is an incredible increase especially in a ridiculously slow market. I bet you want to run out and see what all the fuss is about don&#8217;t you?</p>
<p>Well I&#8217;m happy to brag about those numbers all day but the truth is I sold one e-book in July. Go ahead, do the math. That&#8217;s right. I&#8217;ve sold 15 copies in the last six months. At the same time my print copy has sold only six times as many copies as I sold in July but that is six times three at more than twice the price.</p>
<p>You can see how a positive spin can influence a consumer and even a producer interested in digital content.</p>
<p>Publishers will often compare the success of <strong>digital content</strong> to the slacking sales of a hardback edition but neglect to tell you how the paperback is outselling both.</p>
<p><strong>Digital content</strong> is a new toy for the <strong>comics</strong> industry. Don&#8217;t rush in ill informed. Don&#8217;t tie up your <strong>digital distribution</strong> rights based on clouded numbers. Don&#8217;t become a statistic in a digital bookstore with an app provider that promises you a gateway to an exciting new market that is yet to be defined.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t throw away your freedoms yet.</p>
<p>My opinion is that <strong>digital content</strong> should be considered disposable content and should be priced accordingly.</p>
<p><img class="size-full wp-image-7550 alignright" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/coke_can.jpg" alt="" width="173" height="126" />I can&#8217;t see selling a <strong>digital comic</strong> for more than the price of a can of soda or a candy bar. I want to be ravenous about what I want to read regarding comics. I want to read as much as I can and I am not excited about storing the content the way I am excited about collecting a comic book. Sell me the comic for <strong>99¢</strong> or a subscription of 12 for <strong>$10</strong> and I&#8217;ll be happy.</p>
<p>This is our time to reach a wider audience than we could have ever imagined. We want the world to see our <strong>comics</strong>. Our <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property" target="_blank">intellectual property</a></strong>. A hundred thousand people might be willing to spend a buck on a digital comic like they do on music but raise the price and you will see those numbers fall dramatically. Would you rather sell a hundred thousand e-comics at a dollar or one thousand e-comics at two or three dollars?</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-7546" src="http://www.co2comics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/walmart.jpg" alt="" width="107" height="82" />Be willing to wholesale your comics and you will find a greater audience. If you don&#8217;t believe me look at the <strong>Walmarts</strong> of the world. They find their success in selling large quantities at the lowest possible price and they are making dinosaurs out of their competition.</p>
<p><strong>Marvel</strong> and <strong>DC</strong> will continue to dictate the market and control the IP of the comic world if everyone is enticed to follow their lead into overpriced content. The market for independent comic publishers will always remain constricted if we continue to price our product where only the hardcore fan is willing to pay for it.</p>
<p>Reach the masses by selling to their pocket change and you will have a property that everyone wants and is eventually willing to pay top dollar for.</p>
